Frequently Asked Questions of the Father Daughter Ball
***We have had many inquiries as to what should be the appropriate age of the daughter(s) attending this event. To answer this, we suggest that the father be comfortable bringing and taking care of his daughter(s) on his own. We do have many female volunteers wearing Logo Badges available to assist the fathers if there is an immediate need.

DATES: Saturday, February 6 & Saturday, February 13, 2016.
WHERE: "City Side Convention Center"of the DECC (Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center) in the Lake Superior Ballroom. Located on second floor at the top of the escalators and to the left. There will be signs posted with directions from ramps and entrances.
PARKING: DECC parking lot or ramp. Cost is $5.00 per vehicle. You may drop off and pick-up your daughter at Entrance "B". ***See door service at bottom of page.
TIMES: Doors open promptly at 5:00 pm. Program at 5:30 pm. Sit down dinner serving begins promptly at 5:45 pm. Ball ends at 10:00pm.
TICKETS: Tickets go on sale online at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015. Watch the FDB website for the link - or sign up for email reminders. Your tickets will be available for pick-up at the "WILL-CALL" tables at the bottom of the escalators and stairs at Entrance "B". Watch for the signs!
**Please fill out your section of the ticket and have ready to present at the door of the ballroom when entering.
SEATING: Open seating for eight at each table. Inner tables around the dance floor may be removed after dinner to enlarge the dance floor area - these tables will have signs. We cannot guarantee groups of 8 will be seated all together. Please be seated by 5:30 pm.
*** SAFETY RULES***: At the request of the Father Daughter Ball Coordinators and the DECC Staff, we ask that you keep your daughter supervised at all times. As the DECC is open to the public, we cannot keep our event private & totally secured. Your daughter(s) may not use the elevator or escalators without your presence. Please discuss this before arriving. We will be checking your tickets upon arrival and then you will receive a hand stamp which will be checked each time you enter and exit the ballroom. Dads: please keep your tickets in your pocket. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we would rather error on the side of caution than have an incident. We thank you in advance for your compliance.
MENU: Chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans & carrots, rolls & butter and salad. Gluten free ice cream for dessert. If you have any special dietary requests, please contact the DECC catering office at 218.722.5573 prior to the event to make special arrangements.
MUSIC: Music is tasteful and fun. You will recognize many familiar and old favorites! Be ready for the Limbo and the Chicken Dance. This year's music will be provided by Shelly’s Mobile Music Machine and Diamond Max Entertainment.
ATTIRE: This is a special occasion and an opportunity to wear your "Sunday Best". Daughters usually wear dresses - some come in gowns. Fathers often wear dress shirts and ties; suits are common attire (even a few tuxedos). Coat check available to the left of Entrance “B”, Split Rock Room (at bottom of escalators).
PHOTOS: Lynnette's Portrait Design will be offering portrait packages for a minimal charge. If interested, please click here for 2015 package information, then print, fill out requested information and bring along with your check payable to “Lynnette’s Portrait Design”. Pictures will begin when the doors open at 4:15pm in the French River Room - located on the second floor across from the ballroom. We will close briefly for the dinner hour - 5:30 -6:15 so dinner can be served in a timely manner. Pictures will then resume and go through the early part of the evening. The DJ will make a couple of last call announcements. So, enjoy your evening by not spending all your time waiting in line!
DOOR SERVICE: Our volunteers will be available to stand and wait with your daughter(s) at Entrance “B” while you go to park your car or to pick it up after the event - Volunteers with Father Daughter Ball LOGO NAME BADGES will be posted at this door - speak with them directly. Again, the drop-off and pick-up location is Entrance "B"- Bottom of escalators.
WASH ROOM ATTENDANTS: There are two attendants available at all times to escort/assist your daughter as needed to use the restroom, etc. Let us know how we can help. Look for the ladies wearing our LOGO Badges. We want this to be a memorable evening for you. New this year - a "family restroom" is located next to the other restrooms on the ballroom floor level.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: If you are interested in financially partnering with our ministry or giving a gift in kind, please contact us to request information. Any remaining funds from this year’s event will go directly back into the ministry for next year.
LOST & FOUND: Items found during the event are usually brought to the information table outside of the ballroom. Please check there first. We will then bring these items periodically to the DJ to announce during the evening. All items remaining after the event will be placed in the lost and found at the DECC. You may call the DECC at 218.722.5573 the following business day to claim your items.
*This ministry is specifically intended for fathers (and father figures) to strengthen their relationships with their daughter(s). It also provides an excellent opportunity for fathers to show their daughter(s) what a dating experience should be. These precious moments will always be cherished in both your hearts!
We would also suggest that you encourage your daughter to regularly attend a church sponsored youth group (if she doesn't already do so) where she will form wholesome relationships and lasting friendships with "God loving" peers.

If you have just begun attending the Father Daughter Ball or have struggled to obtain tickets for this event, you may not realize, that not so very long ago, we had to beg dads to bring their daughters to the ball! When we first brought the proposal to our church council, they were a bit apprehensive about the night, hesitating whether or not there was enough interest in such an event and also concerned with over-extending ourselves financially. We persisted, and thankfully, there were members who whole-heartedly supported our vision! So with their encouragement, we took a leap of faith and God opened doors! We rented the cafeteria at Marshall School, advertised in the paper, recruited volunteers and worked with KDNW to borrow their sound system and "rent" a DJ. We managed this in about a month! The Father-Daughter Ball in Duluth was "born" in February of 1997.
conception began a couple months earlier when we had read about a father, Jim Massery, who had held the first Father Daughter Dance in 1993 in Massachusetts. His inspiration had come from listening to a broadcast from Focus on the Family where Dr. James Dobson was addressing the importance of fathers and daughters to have strong, healthy relationships. Massery felt led to encourage other fathers and daughters in his area to strengthen this bond, so he held the first Father-Daughter Dance at his church. It was his hope, and now ministry, that non-profit dances would be held all across the United States. And they are!
We were compelled by the thought of having such a special night for the fathers and daughters in our community. We were excited that our own daughters could be a part of something so wonderful! We thought everyone would want to go! We were mistaken. The dads weren't as thrilled as we'd hoped. Since we are persistent, we begged, pleaded and promised that if they came, they would have fun! And they did. We had taken our first baby steps.
Since then, as with all "children", we have been blessed and surprised with the growth. We moved to the Greysolon Plaza Ballroom in 1999 and gradually began adding additional evenings to accommodate the increasing interest. By 2006, we expanded the Father Daughter Ball to four evenings with just over 1400 guests! In 2007, the tickets for the ball sold out in just over an hour! God is good! When Greysolon Plaza Ballroom was sold, we made the decision to change our venue. We began hosting our event at the DECC Lake Superior Ballroom in 2009. We are now able to accommodate 960 guests per evening and we hold the event two evenings each year. The DECC staff has been absolutely tremendous to work with and again, we were blessed by this move.
2015 brings us the celebration of our 19th Annual Father Daughter Ball! Each year we continue to be encouraged by the wonderful response, and are thankful for the continued help and support from our church family at Christ Lutheran in Duluth. We are amazed at the workings of Christ and praise Him for the success of this event. From our humble beginnings, with 150 guests, to our move to the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, our desire remains the same: for fathers and daughters in our area to enjoy an evening together that they will treasure forever and that the presence of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, is felt.
